A Re-Imagining of An Incredible Drum Kit

Since originally releasing back in 1975, the Recording Custom series, or Yamaha 9000 Series as it used to be known, has become an industry standard drum set.

Widely regarded as the most recorded drum kit in musical history, the Yamaha Recording Custom series has been hugely influential on shaping the modern drum kit as we know it, including the way the shells are constructed, having interchangeable hardware and high gloss lacquer finishing.

Not content to rest on their laurels and with a mission to constantly improve their products, Yamaha are re-launching the Recording Custom series after three years of intensive research and development which has resulted in a completely new design for this incredible drum kit series.

Designed for recording in the studio, as recording technology has progressed it was important that the Recording Custom progressed.

Now, the new version of the Yamaha RC drum kit is great for use with modern recording techniques and technology while also serving as an incredible drum kit for live performance.

Designed with Steve Gadd

Steve Gadd, having toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in popular music history, including acts such as Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon and Steely Dan, has become an absolute legend in his own right.

Yamaha’s top drum engineers and research & development team worked closely with Gadd over a period of three years where they trialled many different plies and other construction techniques while taking on feedback and ideas from Gadd along the way in order to create a new and improved Recording Custom series.

The end result is a new kit that has vastly improved upon the previous iterations while retaining the same feel of the Recording Custom that drummers the world over have come to know and love.

100% Birch Shells with Yamaha Y.E.S.S. Tom Mount System

Yamaha’s Jazz Recording Custom Drum Shell Kit is a four-piece shell pack that comes with an 18” kick drum, 10” and 12” rack toms and a 14” floor tom.

Combining classic Yamaha sound with cutting-edge manufacturing improvements, you can enjoy the sound and feel that has made the Recording Custom set so popular while utilising the latest technological advancements.

Each shell is made from 100% Birch 6-ply wood and they feature 30-degree bearing edges. High-tension lugs are used, reminiscent of Yamaha’s famous Absolute lug styling, and are now weighted to improve on the subtler low frequencies, or “ghost notes”.

They also have greater sensitivity to dynamics making them extremely versatile, working great with any style of drumming while perfectly reflecting your expression and the nuances of your performance.

On the floor and rack toms you will find the top head is Remo US coated Ambassador while the bottom is a Remo US Clear Ambassador.

The bass drum features a Remo Smooth White PS3 front head which features the Yamaha logo while the batter is a Remo Coated Ambassador.

The Jazz Recording Custom drum shell kit also comes with a Y.E.S.S. tom mount. That’s the Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System which ensures minimal contact with the actual drum shell, ensuring maximum sustain and drum tone.

The old adage would have it that you shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken, however, when Yamaha are able to produce such a fantastic kit by re-designing a well-loved and classic kit, who are we to argue?

Retaining the ease of tuning and incredible feel of the original, the new Recording Custom shells deliver a fantastic full-bodied, punchy and resonant tones. You get a recording perfect sound even before post-recording processing.
