Component Composition

Composition with the Teenage Engineering OP-Z is based around a 16-track sequencer which runs all the tracks independently.

This means that individual track speeds and track lengths are possible, plus you can add unique step behaviours to each of the 16 steps, which Teenage Engineering refer to as “step components”.

Basically, you start with the first layer of a traditional 16 step sequencer, then with a second layer you add variations per cycle, note variation, micro sequencing, direction, parameter changes, re-trigs and much more – all within a single step.

In total, you have 14 components that are sorted into three groups; triggers, note variations and specials with all 14 components having 10 values and behaviour programs – giving you 140 different ways to alter a single step – the potential is huge.

Intuitive and Visually Unique

Composing is intuitive and extremely fast. All the keys are backlit with multi-colour LED lights with instant machine feedback – a must have for the adverse lighting conditions in the venue you’re gigging, or when you’re staying up late at home, composing deep into the night. The print on the OP-Z is even made with special glow-in-the-dark paint!

BYOS - Bring Your Own Screen

While the OP-Z synthesizer is made to be completely stand-alone so you can use it anywhere, anytime, Teenage Engineering have added in a great feature for when you want to take it a step further.

The new BYOS – Bring Your Own Screen concept allows you to connect the OP-Z synth to your iPhone or iPad adding in awesome graphics, an interactive UI and synced animations to inspire you.

Using the free OP-Z app, you have access to all sorts of great features.

You can even use your phone’s camera to snap a series of photos and then arrange them to the beat of your music for a custom, synchronised music video!

Dropbox is also supported so you can easily transfer artwork to your iOS device wirelessly.

Furthermore, the OP-Z app ports the sound engine to run simultaneously for “dual domain synthesis” meaning latency between image and sound is eliminated for seamless performance.

Full Unity 3D Integration

The OP-Z has been tailor made to work with Unity 3D; the world’s most popular multi-platform game engine.

Working closely with the Unity studio in Tokyo and with software super hero/renowned VJ Keijiro Takahashi, Teenage Engineering have had access to tools and shaders personally developed by Takahashi for delivering incredible 3D graphics that run at full speed on iPhone and Pad.

New Tape Feature Keeps It Old School

Making sure the OP-Z brings with it some old school cool, this ultra-compact, portable synthesizer comes equipped with a new tape feature.

Basically, it records everything you program into the sequencer in real time. It has its own dedicated track so you can sequence it, trig the in-point, length and speed.

A range of different tape reels are on offer, each with their own unique characteristics and features, and you can use them to wind-up your sound, scrub and scratch and add that retro vibe and a live, organic element to your sound.

New Sampling Mode and More

Now available for download is the new OS 1.2.5 update for the Teenage Engineering OP-Z.

This latest update includes a brand-new sampling moed which you can use to create samples directly from your microphone, headset or USB.

You can now send digital audio to your OP-Z via the 2 channela udio interface for sampling and receive digital audio from the OP-Z for easier recording.

The update also influces a full OP-1 sample format supporting pitch, gain, playmode and play direction along with stability improvements and fixes.
