SPL’s GainStation 1 is a single-channel standalone desktop preamplifier for capturing microphones and high-impedance instruments.
Preamps such as the GainStation can amplify sources to a standard of quality that negates the need for copious EQ or compression later in the mixing process. More presence and substance are added to each signal, allowing them to cut through in a mix even at lower levels. Meanwhile, lower-end signals remain transparent with clear intonation.
Three separate impedances are on offer and can be switched to match almost any microphone type from ribbon to large diaphragm condenser: 200 Ohms, 1,2 & 10 kOhms.
GainStation harnesses the power of two preamplifier stages based on SPL’s discrete op-amp design, all operating on a 60V rail. The high voltage value clocks in at almost double that of traditional preamp designs, and offers a highly superior dynamic range of 130dB.
The first of two stages is a super-fast Class-A clean stage built to capture sound in its purest form, while the secondary tube stage is built to offer sound shaping talents from subtle warmth up to full-on valve saturation.
