The Director Mk2 from SPL, now in its second iteration, is a comprehensive stereo preamplifier designed to handle ten sources and deliver exceptional audio quality. It supports sample rates up to 768kHz with 32-bit resolution and DSD4 playback.

SPL has taken great care, as they have with their renowned professional outboard products, to ensure that the volume control of the Director Mk2 operates entirely in the analogue domain. This approach allows for precise gain adjustments without compromising the resolution of the conversion stage, which is often a concern with modern DAC peripherals.

The Director Mk2 features a specially selected ALPS RK27 'Big Blue' volume potentiometer that is fully motorized, providing both remote control functionality and a solid, reliable feel with precise channel matching.

This second-generation preamp and DAC from SPL offers a versatile range of analogue and digital input options, including two balanced XLRs, four unbalanced RCA, AES/EBU, USB, coaxial, and optical connections. SPL has taken into consideration a wide variety of source devices, including computers, DAPs, phono preamps like the Phonos, and headphone amps such as the Phonitor XE.

One of the notable improvements in the Mk2 version of the Director is the complete redesign of the digital-to-analogue conversion board. The new component features a fresh architecture centred around AKM's highly acclaimed AK4490 'Velvet Sound' chip, which supports PCM up to 768kHz with 32-bit resolution, as well as DSD playback up to DSD4 or 256.
