You'd be forgiven for thinking that this is "just another Precision Bass copy", as on the surface that's exactly what it looks like. However, as we all know, taking any kind of instrument just on looks alone can often lead to some surprises when it comes to fully experiencing it.

Featuring a Sandberg P-style split coil pickup, Sandberg 2-band Active/Passive Preamp, and solidly constructed with a canadian hardrock maple neck and Alder body, the California VS is most certainly a bass to be reckoned with.

The Pickup

This pickup has been specially designed by Sandberg for use on the California VS, and is perfect for purveyors of that classic P-Bass sound wanting something a little more. Just imaging: a meaty P-Bass style tone with an in-your-face Stingray type attack and you'll get an idea of just how awesome the Split coil pickup is.

The larger-than-usual poles you see adorning the pickup also help to capture the full movement of each string, ensuring that no frequencies are lost, even when playing with heavy down-tuned settings.

The Preamp

What initially looks like a standard setup has a clever little surprise in store, in the shape of a push/pull Volume control knob that allows you to set the preamp to Active or Passive - once set to Passive your Tone control still works as a tone cut.

Next to the Volume control you have Treble, which allows you to either boost the Treble or cut the tone. And finally there's the Bass control, which works in the same way as the Treble control but for your low-end frequencies. Exciting stuff!

Made to be Played

The ergonomically designed curvature of the California VS's relatively lightweight Alder body ensures that it rests comfortably against you whilst you're playing, helping make even the longest of live shows, rehearsals or studio sessions pass by that little bit easier. This combined with the awesome looks, and the solid hard-wood construction makes repeatedly playing this bass for extended periods of time seem like more of a pleasure than a chore.

The most difficult thing I've found when it comes to Sandberg basses is thinking up a reason NOT to buy one (especially when it comes to such a low price!).
