XSR Cymbal Perfection Process

To create the best possible cymbals for the XSR line, Sabian put each cymbal through a rigorous process.

Sabian's expert metallurgists combine exact measured amounts of copper, tin and silver and use a centuries-old recipe to create Sabian B20 bronze alloy.

Next, the molten-hot B20 bronze is hand-poured into pots. Once cooled, they yield B20 bronze castings that already have musical qualities.

The B20 castings are then meticulously hand-separated by weight and all impurities are removed before the castings are fed through a rolling oven as many as a dozen times which involves a crew of five people working with incredible precision under intense heat.

Throughout the rolling process, the blanks are carefully rotated so as to create a molecular weave for increased strength and durability.

As the castings become cymbal blanks, custom-built machine tools are then hand-operated by experts to press bells into the blanks, drill holes in the centre, cut the cymbals down to size and bump them to begin the shaping.

Lathe craftsmen operate specially retrofitted lathes, thinning the cymbals to the desired gauge while adding crucial tonal grooves before then trimming the cymbals to the exact required size and buffing the edges for smoothness.

Each cymbal is then hand-tested and hand-weighed in the Sabian Vault by Vault sound specialists before being placed on a shelf to age - allowing the active molecules to slow down and stabilise.

The cymbals are then hand-tested again by two Vault specialists to ensure they fit the strict parameters of the series and model.
