In 1960, sales of the Gibson Les Paul were dwindling and Gibson decided it was time to redesign the model.

The result of this redesign was the Gibson Les Paul SG which featured a thinner, flat-topped body and the, now iconic, double cutaway shape along with changes to the neck and heel.

This new take on the Gibson Les Paul only included the name "Les Paul" in its title for a short while before forever becoming known as simply the Gibson SG.

Iconic Double Cutaway Design

The 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG took many design concepts from its predecessor but boasted several significant changes.

Many guitarists were finding the previous Les Paul models too heavy and not prepared to perform the modern music of the 60s.

In response to this, Gibson made the Les Paul SG with a thinner, flat-topped body.

Increasing playability dramatically, the Gibson Les Paul SG also features a double cutaway, possibly its most distinctive design alteration over the older models.

With this additional cutaway Les Paul, the Gibson Les Paul SG provides even easier access to higher frets.

The Gibson 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue Stop Bar has also been treated to a nitrocellulose VOS vintage patina finish to give it an authentically aged appearance.

Billed as having the "fastest neck in the world" upon its release in 1961, the Gibson Les Paul SG also featured a slender neck profile and small heel which has been recreated to the minutest detail on the Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul SG Standard Reissue with a 1960 Slim Taper profile.

Solid Mahogany has been used for the neck which is fitted to the body with an old school long tenon joint and hide glue fit.

Atop the neck is a traditional Rosewood fretboard that has also been fitted with hide glue and boasts Authentic Medium-Jumbo frets to further provide that classic playing feel.

Recreating That Raucous Sound

In order to recreate the devilish tone of the original, the Gibson Custom Shop have fitted the Gibson 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue Stop Bar with a pair of Custombucker Alnico III humbuckers.

These humbucking pickups have been painstakingly designed and put together to ensure truly authentic vintage tone. The pickups are also unpotted to give you the raw sound of the original 1961 Les Paul SG.

A 3-way Switchcraft pickup selector allows you to choose between using either pickup or both at once.

There are two volume and two tone controls so you can mix and shape your output with ease.

Giving you the real deal when it comes to feel and performance, the controls boast CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers and Black Beauty capacitors.

Authentic Hardware

Up on the headstock, just as you'd find in an original era Gibson SG, there are six Kluson single line, double ring tuning machines offering precise and secure tuning of your strings.

On the body, there's an ABR-1 bridge with nickel-plated brass saddles supported by a stop bar ensuring precise intonation and great sustain.

Within the neck is an authentic 1950s no-tube truss rod topped with an authentic stepped 2-ply "Les Paul" truss rod cover for true accuracy.
