Professional-Grade, Shorter Scale Bass Guitar
Originally introduced in 1966 as Leo Fender's final bass design for the company, the Mustang Bass was a modern, shorter-scale alternative to the popular Precision and Jazz basses of the era.
Lightweight and more comfortable to play than its longer-scale siblings, and featuring a Split Coil pickup that was similar to the P-Bass (albeit a little less punchy-sounding), these fun-little low-end machines were a popular choice for younger musicians and guitarists looking to branch out into the bass-playing world.
Despite officially only being produced until 1981, the Mustang Bass was reintroduced by Fender Japan at the turn of the century, and despite one or two stumbles along the way, its popularity continues to grow until this day.
Fender American Performer Series
Made in Corona, California, the American Performer Series Mustang Bass has been made to offer the exceptional tone and feel you've come to expect from an Authentic Fender - but with all-new features designed to inspire you on to greatness.
First of all this bass features a lightweight Alder body, and a satin-finished, short-scale Maple neck topped with a Rosewood fingerboard, offering a superior level of comfort over other bass guitars.
Also featuring newly designed Yosemite pickups, a Master Greasebucket Tone Circuit (more on that later), a vintage-style Pearloid pickguard, and even a deluxe padded gig bag to keep it safe, this Mustang bass is ideal for the working professional.
What Are Yosemite Pickups?
Newly designed for the American Performer Series of instruments, Yosemite pickups feature flat-staggered pole pieces and shellac potting. This results in an increased output, while at the same time allowing the coils to breathe, therefore minimising feedback.
Ideal for any musical situation, this Split Coil and Single Coil pickup configuration produces an array of rich, expressive tones. With the growling Split Coil Mustang pickup sitting in the mid position, and the biting Single Coil Jazz Pickup at the bridge, this bass is as versatile and dynamic as you could want it to be.
Premium Electronics
In addition to each pickup having independent Volume control pots, there's a Master Greasebucket Tone Circuit to contend with. Greasebucket tone circuitry allows you to shape your tonal highs without adding any extra bass into the mix, preserving your tone and letting every note ring out.
Short Scale Construction
As you may have noticed, the scale length on this bass is significantly shorter than with its Precision and Jazz counterparts. Whilst this may mean you have only 19 frets to play with, the benefits granted by playing a shortscale Mustang bass are many.
First of all, this bass is noticeably lighter than it's longer-scale brethren, which means there's less back fatigue caused during those long studio sessions and energetic live performances.
This also helps with how much strain your putting on your fingers and shoulders when playing. With everything being a little closer together, your fingers won't need to stretch as much, making each note that little bit easier to get to.
A shorter-scale bass, such as the Fender American Performer Mustang, is therefore ideal for smaller players, or bassists who (like me) occasionally suffer from tendonitis flareups and would otherwise struggle through a live set on a longer-scale instrument.
Modern Neck Profile
Another modern feature on the American Performer Series Mustang Bass is the inclusion of a Modern "C" profile neck shape. Furthermore, this neck comes complete with a 9.5"-radius Rosewood fingerboard, making it comfortable for pretty much any playing style, and its 19 Jumbo Frets really allow your musical expressiveness to shine through.
