Algorithm Guide: Unleashing the Power of the Eventide H90 Dark
To showcase the diverse effects that the Eventide H90 Dark has to offer, a few standout algorithms from its extensive selection are highlighted here. While not a comprehensive overview, these chosen effects offer a glimpse into the powerful sound-shaping capabilities of the pedal.
Instant Flanger
The Instant Flanger algorithm on the Eventide H90 Dark brings the iconic sound of vintage tape flanging straight to your pedalboard. This algorithm authentically emulates the original 1975 studio rackmount unit, famously used in classic tracks like David Bowie’s "Ashes to Ashes" and Cyndi Lauper’s "Time After Time." Whether used for subtle modulation, stereo sweetening, or more extreme flanging effects, the Instant Flanger is a versatile tool that delivers everything from delicate textures to sweeping, dramatic shifts.
The algorithm offers flexible controls, including Depth, which adjusts the mix of wet and dry signals, and Source, allowing users to select between oscillator, manual, or envelope-based modulation. The Mode control further enhances the stereo experience with options like Shallow, Deep, and Wide, each altering how the Main and Aux outputs from the original hardware are emulated. The algorithm also includes parameters such as Rate for LFO speed, Feedback for intensity, and Low Cut to shape the frequency response of the flange effect. Whether for classic or experimental sounds, the Instant Flanger delivers the unmistakable, swirling richness of vintage flanging.
Tape Echo
The Tape Echo algorithm on the Eventide H90 Dark captures the essence of vintage analog tape delay, replicating the natural warmth, hiss, and imperfections that made early tape machines so iconic. By recording on one magnetic head and playing back on a second with a delay, tape machines created a unique style of delay, which Tape Echo enhances with controls for saturation, wow, and flutter. The Saturation feature lets users dial in the warm, compressed distortion typical of overdriven tape, adding a rich, analog character to the delay.
Additionally, the Wow and Flutter controls simulate the subtle pitch and amplitude modulations caused by inconsistencies in the tape's motion across the heads, delivering an authentic, vintage feel. The algorithm also offers flexible delay settings, allowing users to adjust the delay times for Delay A and Delay B, and tailor the feedback and mix for mono or stereo outputs. Whether you're after classic slapback echoes or ambient, warbled soundscapes, the Tape Echo algorithm brings the unmistakable charm of analog tape to your effects chain.
Blackhole
The Blackhole algorithm on the Eventide H90 Dark is a reverb effect that operates on a truly galactic scale, delivering lush, expansive soundscapes that can elevate any musical composition. Originally a preset in the DSP4000 and later featured in the H8000, its rich and captivating character earned it a place as one of the standout algorithms in Eventide’s Space guitar pedal.
Blackhole features a comprehensive set of controls, starting with the Mix, which adjusts the balance between wet and dry signals. The Gravity control offers a unique twist, allowing users to manipulate decay times from dense to smooth, and even explore reverse reverb effects. Users can also determine the Size of the reverb, ranging from cartoonishly small to cosmically epic. Additional controls such as Pre Delay, Low Level, and High Level fine-tune the reverb's response across the frequency spectrum, while Mod Depth and Mod Rate add subtle modulation to enhance the reverb tail's movement. For those looking to create colossal sounds, the Feedback control can extend reverberation times to infinite, with the option to freeze the effect. Whether crafting ambient textures or explosive reverberations, the Blackhole algorithm invites users to explore the vastness of sound with confidence.
HotSawz
The HotSawz algorithm transforms the Eventide H90 Dark into a powerful synthesizer, providing a rich palette for crafting unique sounds. Built on classic subtractive synthesis, HotSawz utilizes six oscillators based on saw waves, all of which track a mono pitch for cohesive sound production. With a low-pass filter as its foundation, this algorithm allows for a wide range of tonal possibilities.
HotSawz features three modulation sources: LFO, Envelope Follower, and Gate, alongside four assignable modulation destinations—Filter Cutoff, Volume, Pitch, and Oscillator Depth. Users can create dynamic soundscapes by assigning multiple modulation sources to the same destination, resulting in 64 possible source-to-destination combinations. The Mix knob offers four distinct ranges for blending dry signals with various oscillator combinations, enabling users to explore diverse sonic textures. Additional controls like Sub Mix, S + R Mix, and All Mix provide fine-tuning options for balancing lower octave and upper octave oscillators.
The algorithm's flexible parameters, including Cutoff, Resonance, and Osc Depth, allow for precise manipulation of sound characteristics, while the Speed control adjusts the LFO’s wave shape and speed across different frequency ranges. The Gate functionality introduces dynamic modulation based on the input level, and the Envelope adds further depth by responding to the input dynamics. With performance parameters like Retrigger, HotSawz empowers musicians to create innovative and expressive sounds, making it an invaluable addition to any rig.
Crystals
The Crystals algorithm is a hallmark effect from Eventide, renowned for its ability to produce mesmerizing soundscapes. By combining twin reverse pitch shifters, delays, feedback, and reverb, Crystals can create ethereal climbing and cascading pitched delays, as well as distinct reverbs and granular effects that help instruments stand out in a mix.
The Mix control allows users to blend wet and dry signals, with a setting of 100% delivering an entirely wet output. Each pitch shifter, Pitch A and Pitch B, can be individually adjusted to determine the amount of pitch shift in cents, enabling precise tuning and harmonization. The Pitch A/Pitch B Mix knob regulates the balance between the two pitches, enhancing the richness of the sound.
With separate Reverse Delay Buffers for A and B, users can manipulate the length of the reverse delay, which can sync with the tempo for rhythmic subdivisions or be set in milliseconds. The Reverb Mix Level and Reverb Decay Rate parameters fine-tune the depth and texture of the reverb effect, while the Feedback A and Feedback B controls add further complexity by adjusting the feedback levels for each pitch shifter.
