The pad itself is adjustable via Velcro Straps that you stick down on to your shell so you can have more or less damping with a simple adjustment.
With a Hinged design the main part of the pad sits up against the batter head and bounces when the beater hits the head allowing for the attack to come through before returning to dampen those unwanted over tones.
If being used on a smaller depth drum the opposing part of the pad does the same.
