Ever wanted to transform the sound from your guitar or bass into something resembling a classic synthesizer? Well, with the polyphonic SYNTH9 from Electro Harmonix, now you can! This excellent pedal comes with 9 different presets for you to tweak, with everything from searing lead synths to funky synth bass grooves and beyond.
Emulates 9 different classic synth sounds!
As with all pedals from Electro Harmonix, the SYNTH9 is very straightforward to use. Both the Dry and Synth signals have their own volume controls for a start, meaning the mix can be as clean or wet as you want it. Then there's Ctrl 1 and Ctrl 2 control knobs, to give you precise control over each preset's parameters.
What does it do?
Being largely popular in the late 1970's and most of the 1980's, if you've listened to more than a few songs from that era then the chances are you will have heard some of the sounds available from the SYNTH9's presets. Think of the classic Van Halen song "Jump", the haunting keyboard riff for Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", or the moody electro stylings of Kraftwerk's "The Model" and you'll be on the right track.
As recommended by Electro Harmonix themselves, there's a bunch of things you need to make sure to do in order to get the best out of the SYNTH9:
Always have it as the first pedal in any pedal effects chain, everything else is to come after (treat it as an instrument in that respect, rather than just another effect)
For the clearest sound, always use the guitar's bridge pickup, with the guitar's volume pot turned up to 10
Never place distortion/overdrive in front of the SYNTH9, as this would muddy up the output signal and cause the tracking to be unstable
Don't use a compressor pedal in the same pedal chain, as the SYNTH9 already has one built in that is active at all times!
