EHX Platform - a fully-featured stereo Compressor/Limiter with built in Overdrive circuit and Volume Swell function
The Platform, from Electro Harmonix, is a studio-quality Compressor and Limiter with in-built Overdrive circuit, all housed in a single, affordable effects pedal. Whether you need to use Compression on guitar, bass or even keyboard, in the studio or live on stage, the Platform is up to the job and gives you precise control over your signal's volume.
Small, affordable and powerful
Engaging these powerful controls to fully tailor and enhance your sound to your own precise requirements couldn't be more simple. Whether your signal is clean or you're using the Overdrive circuit too, your sound can be enhanced in the following ways:
Sustain adjusts your compression ratio. Utilise this control to increase or decrease just how much compression is applied to your signal once the threshold is crossed. Practically speaking, the compression effectively squashes your signal level and levels out your dynamics, giving you a much more consistent output volume. In Limiter mode, this control adjusts the threshold level, determining just when the limiter acts on your signal.
Attack is the control which sets just how quickly/slowly the compressor/limiter is activated once the set threshold has been reached.
Release controls just how quickly the compressor/limiter ceases to function once your signal drops below the threshold
Volume is the master volume control for the whole pedal, and is used to balance your level between bypass and effect mode.
And finally Knee changes the curve of your compression/limiting to make the compression sound more or less transparent, allowing you to choose between a softer and subtle compression (Soft Knee) or a more dramatic effect (Hard Knee)
Whether you're using the Platform as a Compressor or Limiter, the effects can be as dramatic or subtle as you like. In addition to these, there's also an in-built Overdrive circuit, and an excellent Swell algorithm - which is triggered when each new note is played, with the Swell control knob determining the fade-in time of the effect (if set to zero, the Swell effect is bypassed completely).
One of the key features of the Platform from EHX is undoubtedly the price. If you want to buy a studio-grade compression unit, even for your DAW, the cost can often be off-putting. However, the Platform comes at a cost that's affordable at a price that won't break the bank.
