Let me introduce to you the Operation Overlord, the latest in a long line of amazing and innovative pedals from Electro Harmonix. Want some classy, tube-amp style overdrive on your guitar? No problem. Want to take your electric piano and make it sound like a hammond organ? You got it! This multi-instrumental, stereo input/output Overdrive pedal has got us very excited over here at PMT, at a level that's usually only achievable if there's pizza involved.
The High Point of the Greatest Generation!
You get quite a broad range of options and controls available to you with the Operation Overlord, allowing you to generate and tweak a vast array of sounds for keyboards, synths, guitars, basses and more! You get an active 3-band EQ, a Boost mode (operated by footswitch) and even a dry blend. On top of this the Operation Overlord also features TWO independent distortion channels for use with stereo setups.
Normal vs Boost
The Operation Overlord operates in two different modes: Normal and Boost. In Normal you get three JFET gain stages for an amp-like array of low to medium gain sounds, and the Gain control knob allows you to state just how much overdrive is used. In Boost you get the addition of a classic pedal-style overdrive circuit prior to the JFET stages, increasing overall distortion levels. When the Boost mode is activated the blue LED lights up, and both the Gain and Boost knobs are active for you to make full use of.
How It All Works
The controls for this awesome pedal, despite being many in number, are actually relatively straight forward to follow. As with all pedals though, it would be advisable to familiarise yourself with the settings in your own private rehearsal space before rocking out on stage with this bad boy: make sure that you get it purring exactly how you want to!
First there's the Gain knob, which is used to control the amount of overdrive/distortion on show - the more you turn the control clockwise, the high the amount of gain. Then there's the Boost control, which lets you state how much extra gain is fed into the main circuit when the Boost & Normal modes are both engaged. The Dry control knob blends an unaltered signal with the distorted signal, which is useful for preserving your tone (especially useful for keyboards and bass guitars). Next comes the Input LVL Switch, with which you control your instrument's overall input level (HI for low-level instruments, NORM for guitars with humbuckers, and LO for high-output instruments, such as those with active pickups or some synthesisers).
Still with me? Good, because there's still a few more to discuss. The 3-band EQ is fairly straight forward, with Bass, Mid and Treble knobs each controlling the levels of their respective frequency ranges. The Vol control knob allows you to set the overall volume output of the Operation Overlord. The two footswitched (Bypass and Boost) are accompanied by their own LED's (Red and Blue respectively) and are used to engage each mode respectively (Bypass, when engaged, lights up the Red LED and activates the pedal. When disengaged the pedal reverts to a buffered bypass mode).
Finally there's the four jack sockets. You have two Input Jacks (L/R stereo) and two Output Jacks (also L/R stereo), giving you the option of using either mono or stereo inputs/outputs, useful for splitting the signal into two amplifiers or even sending one to a mixing board and the other to an amp.
