The Gray Channel, Dynamic Dirt Doubler Overdrive Pedal from EarthQuaker Devices
As part of the excellent range of hand made pedals from EarthQuaker Devices new to PMT, this excellent "twofer" would make a perfect adornment to any guitar players pedal board. Based on a vintage hard-clipping gray box overdrive, the Grey Channel features two channels with plenty of clipping options that manages to leave the character of both the guitar and amp intact whilst retaining the classic warm overdrive sound it's designers set out to achieve.
Several Clipping Options and a Nice Big Bass Response!
The Gray Channel is awash with controls and settings for you to master, but don't let this put you off as they're relatively easy to get to grips with. To begin with there's the switches, which are as straight forward as you could wish for: Channel Switch lets you choose between the Red and Green channels; Activate Switch is simply to turn the effect on or off. Then there's the two channels themselves.
Green Channel Controls
Gain:
the Gain control lets you adjust the drive of the channel, with clockwise turns giving you more dirt and counterclockwise turns cleaning the signal.
Green: this control simply sets the output level when the green LED is lit
Toggle: The toggle switch has three differen't settings to determine what style if clipping you'd like. "Si" for Silicon, "N" for No clipping and "Ge" for Germanium Clipping
Red Channel Controls
Gain: as with the Green channel gain control, this lets you adjust the drive levels of this channel.
Red: Sets the output level for when the res LED is lit
Toggle: Once again, this lets you determine which particular style of clipping you'd like on the channel: "LED" for LED Clipping, "N" for No clipping and "FET" for Mosfet Clipping.
In otherwords, what you're getting here is essentially two different Overdrive / Distortion pedals fused into one, and let's face it: running out of space because you've got 2-3 Overdrive pedals on your board is frustrating, so why not economise with an excellent premium quality pedal that does the work of two?
There is so much variety on this pedal that the best way to discover what each channel does is to play it for yourself..
Features
General Controls: Channel Switch, Activate Switch
Green Controls: Gain, Green, Toggle
Red Controls: Gain, Red, Toggle
Power: 9v DC
Dimensions: 4.625" x 3.7" x 2.25" with knobs
As with all pedals from EarthQuaker Devices, the Gray Channel takes a standard 9 vold DC power supply with negative centre barrel. It's always recommended that a pedal specific power adapter is used, as standard adapters can result in unwanted noise over the signal, and unfiltered dirty power potentially harming your pedal. Do NOT run this pedal at a higher voltage than stated. The current draw of the Gray Channel is 14mA.
