Ever since 2005, those incredible engineers at EarthQuaker Devices in Akron Ohio have been producing exciting new takes on effects pedals, helping encourage you to push your playstyle to its limits and explore plenty of new territory in the process. Their latest release is the simplistic yet powerful Erupter, a pedal so easy to use it'll literally blow your mind.
The Perfect Fuzz Pedal
Contrary to conventional fuzz pedals, the Erupter sounds great regardless of which pickup type you use, and can be placed absolutely anywhere in your effects chain without any impedance mismatching (even before a Wah pedal!).
This is the bit where you realise just how much work has gone into the design of this "simple" fuzz pedal
The Erupter uses a buffered input section, transformer-based pickup simulation, new production 5% 0.5 watt carbon composition resistors, metalised polyester film capacitors, Sprague and BC electrolytic capacitors, plus low-gain, hand-matched NOS silicon transistors to deliver what results in a well-rounded and defined fuzz tone with just the right amount of punch.
Simple Controls
Despite the rigorous design process, the controls of the Erupter couldn't be more simplistic. The single control knob (labelled "Bias") is used to adjust the amount of voltage fed to the NOS silicon transistors, and thus sculpting the type of fuzz you require. At low settings you get a rude, spongy fuzz tone (think "normal fuzz with a dying battery" and you're close to the mark). Increasing the Bias control introduces new harmonics to stack on top of the input signal to produce a much more complex fuzz tone with tighter response, increased output and longer sustain.
The output and gain levels of the Erupter are constant, giving you the thickest fuzz possible and pushing the full frequency range of the guitar out front when you kick it on. This also means that you can sculpt the amount of fuzz in your sound simply by adjusting the volume and tone controls on your guitar, without losing any articulation or output level. And the most exciting part for me: the incredible low-end response on the Erupter makes this fuzz pedal perfect for bass guitars too (Yes!!!).
As with all EarthQuaker Devices, the Erupter has been lovingly crafted by the hands of real-life dream warriors in the foothills of Mt Akron, Ohio USA, and is solidly built to resist the rigours of life on the road.
If you order this item before 3pm today you will qualify for our fast, free and reliable next day delivery service (subject to stock levels, UK customers only).
Highlights
- Flawless classic fuzz tones - full of crushing yet defined low-end and a smooth yet present top-end
