Once again those technical wizards over at EarthQuaker Devices have managed to wow us here at PMT with another one-knobbed-wonder, the Bows: a Germanium Preamp/Boost pedal with a single control knob. Ok, so this one also has a toggle switch too, but it's still arguably the most simplistic preamp pedal I've ever used.
A Little One-Knobber That Wears Many Hats
Designed solely around a rare NOS OC139 black glass transistor, the Bows consists of several tone-shaping abilities spread between two modes: Full and Treble (which are selected with the Tone Toggle switch). If you're looking for a nice warm sound, with plenty of oompf and a thick low-end then you'd need to set this toggle to Full. However, if you're wanting resonant, half-open wah type tone with an eventual rich harmonic distortion, then set this to Treble instead.
Each of the two settings contains it's own specific brand of dirt from the off, but once the level is beyond the midway point their subtleties really shine through. If you really want this pedal to sing, scream, gnash and growl though, I'd recommend fitting a Drive pedal just before it in your pedal board circuit: Full mode turns your light dirt signal into a cascading wave of destruction, and Treble suddenly becomes the ultimate lead tone.

Make sure that you use a standard instrument 9v DC power supply or 9v battery with all EarthQuaker products. Using a normal adapter could result in unwanted electrical noise coming through the amp, or (even worse) could permanently damage your pedal. Do NOT exceed the stated power input. The current draw of the Bows is 9mA.
