Those clever boffins in Akron Ohio have gone and entered the realm of the weird once again, with a new take on the wonderfully-crazy Arpanoid! The Arpanoid V2 from Earthquaker Devices picks up where the previous incarnation left off, and is now home to a couple of impressive little upgrades.
In addition to an all-new soft-click relay switching system, the Arpanoid V2 now has a brand-new Flexi-Switch. This means that in addition to the familiar "On/Off" switching you would normally get with an effects pedal, you now have the option of using the Momentary operation, effectively adding just a quick and effective burst of altered sound into your playing without the need to look like you're Riverdancing.
The First Dedicated Compact Polyphonic Pitch Arpeggiator for Guitar Gets an Upgrade!
The key to the wonderful array of wacky sounds that the Arpanoid Polyphonic Pitch Arpeggiator offer is down to the precision control knobs, and they work like this:
The Step control lets you choose just how many notes are in the sequence, which in turn helps determine the rhythm's pattern and overall feel of the effect. This allows you to unleash odd time signatures, polyrythms and an oddly quantized vibrato effect.
The Wet and Dry controls are where you blend the analogue input signal with the digitally affected signal, so that the effect can be either subtle/ambient or a huge polyphonic cacophony, which can really come in handy during studio work (works on inserts, vocals, synths, drum machines sends... everything!).
The Toggle Switch simply allows you to state the direction of the note sequences: positioned left for up, middle for up & down (or back and forth), and right for simple down.
Now for the fun bit: the Mode selector. This 8-way selector knob allows you to determine not only the tonality of the arpeggio (Major/minor) but also where the arpeggio originates and ends (root to +1 octave, -1 octave to +1 octave etc.). Positions 4 and 8 are my favourite though, as they're the Major and Minor "Random" pattern positions. I had a lot of fun messing with these two, but after an hour or so I started saying "Groovy" and "Far out" a lot, so it's best to experience them in small doses only. Or not, the choice is all yours!
Not Just Another Guitar Pedal
To make the best out of the Arpanoid V2, I'd suggest treating it more like another instrument that you need to take the time to get to know, rather than as just another stompbox. In fact, don't go thinking that it's limited for use with just guitar: try it out on your bass, vocal, or even an electronic drum kit!
