The Folks at Drum Dial have this to say. The Drum Dial Precision Drum Tuner tunes drum easily and precisely, repeatedly. Using the head tympanic pressure rather than tension rod torque, drums are tuned to the tension of the head from an easy-to-read gauge.
Allowing you to tune to the head's tension rather than lugs mitigates any differences in the lug's tolerances, corrosion, and thread ware - all things that affect their pressure on the head through the hoop.
Simply placed next to the tension rod, you can tune without hitting the drum, which makes tuning in loud environments a breeze. Compact and user-friendly, it is indispensable to some drum techs and professional players looking for accurate tuning night after night.
In Use
This is perfect for the drum tech side stage getting fresh heads ready on the drums and can't hear what's going on too well because of setup.
Or the studio when you have to have every spot on for long periods, I use it here as you don't want to start with one tone, and then all of a sudden it's changed and you can't get it back.
Great for when you are using a rented touring kit you aren't familiar with, once you have the drums singing you can take note of the lug tension with the dial and get it to that point time and time again.
It's easy to say "you're not using your ears" but, you still have to use your hearing to get the tone you are after, and then this Drum Dial can be used as a safety net, even if it's just for the final tweak, as I've found you may think a lug is the same pitch but check the tension it could be miles out and that is the difference!
Pre Gig
You have arrived at a venue and it's full of other bands, yes you can ignore their presence and tap away, but to be a successful musician it's predominantly all about the hang, so utilising this in almost silence with your favored noted tensions for each drum you can still chill with everyone.
Then before soundcheck, you can do a quick pitch reference, a little tweak here and there and you'll sound awesome!
Studio
This is more suited for the studio when there is time to adjust tuning, take notes and hone in on your sound.
Having even tension also helps the heads last so much longer I have found, I don't use this Dial all the time, mainly in the studio if I can't really hear the discrepancy in pitch causing chaos
A Great product that most probably should be more expensive but we are kind here at PMT and want you to sound good and not be skint.
