Right up until 1951 only wooden tip drum sticks were commercially available. Although they sounded great, they wore down fairly quickly and left drummer needing to replace sticks on a fairly regular basis.
Introduce Joe Calato who took it as a personal mission to produce drum sticks which both sounded great and would stand the punishment from even the most relentless drummers.
After much experimentation the idea was perfected and the nylon tipped drum stick was born. It didn't just take off, it exploded to the point where almost all drummers began to use Regals revolutionary design, the rest is all history.
