BOSS Box-40 Compact Pedal 40th Anniversary Box Set

Back in 1977 BOSS introduced the world to their now-famous compact series of pedals, with the OD-1, PH-1 and SP-1 being the first three. Due to their colours, these pedals were often referred to as the "traffic light series", and they helped launch an effects revolution that continues today, an incredibly 40 years later!

Special Reissues of the Compact Models That Started It All!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, BOSS have produced the special, limited edition Box-40: a 40th Anniversary Box Set featuring one-time-only reissues of the pedals that started it all: the OD-1 Overdrive, PH-1 Phaser and SP-1 Spectrum. This Box Set is limited to just 1500 worldwide, and each one arrives in a deluxe presentation box, featuring the BOSS 40th Anniversary logo and a numbered message card.

The Pedals

Since BOSS have now sold over 15 million (!!!) units worldwide, it's only fitting that they pay tribute to the ones that started it all with a special edition, hand-wired reissue set.

The BOSS OD-1 has achieved legendary status over the years, and was arguably the first Overdrive pedal in production. During the 1970's, guitarists were mostly using fuzz style distortion sounds, and the introduction of the OD-1 gave them something more than a little different: a much more controlled distortion tone that better reflected the instrument being played. This was achieved through the use of an asymmetric circuit, where both the positive and negative halves of the waveform weren't distorted equally, resulting in a tone that was close to the original signal, only with added distortion.

Early phaser effects attempted to emulte the swirling sounds created by rotating speaker systems. The BOSS PH-1 on the other hand, allowed musicians to produce an array of very unique tones beyond anything that had come before, thanks largely to the highly accurate Rate and Depth controls. Quiet operation and an unsurpassed reliability quickly saw the PH-1 become one of the most popular Phaser effects available with both professional and amateur guitarists alike.

Prior to the more modern Graphic EQ pedals, and prior to the inclusion of 2, 3 and 4-band EQ's on other effects units, BOSS released the SP-1 Spectrum. This excellent little pedal, when activated, would boost a select band of frequencies, allowing muddier sounding instruments to push through the mix and be heard. Despite being designed primarily with electric Guitar and Bass in mind, the SP-1 actually proved to be a favourite amongst Keyboard and Electric piano players.
